Mountain Pass Performance has found that with heavy track use the mechanism that allows OEM calipers to be low-drag starts to lose its effectiveness. This is meant to reduce friction by releasing the brake pad further from the brake disc and thus increasing rolling efficiency. In a low-drag caliper the piston is designed to retract slightly when the brake pedal is released. The Model 3 is equipped with low-drag calipers. The brake lights obviously function as usual when using the disc brakes. Drive smoothly and the car will figure out when to light them up. The car will determine this programmatically and you can see if the brakes are lit on the vehicle graphic in the center display. In one-pedal driving, the brake lights on a Model 3 will still light up based on your rate of deceleration. You didn't say how old your car is, but if your brake fluid isn't a more clear-ish color, it's telling you it's old. But usually I just look at it and check how long it's been sitting there. There are strips you can use to test the brake fluid in the reservoir. Normally it needs to be changed every 2-3 years. That basically means the brakes aren't going to work as well. It's not tires where YMMV and you have to check and rotate/replace whenever.Īs brake fluid gets older, it absorbs more moisture from the air, which in turn lowers the boiling point of the fluid. This is a maintenance item that needs to be changed on intervals.
